Tile Shower - Residential
with Schluter-KERDI, Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN, Schluter-SHOWER-ST/-SR
Just because a shower looks waterproof doesn’t mean it is. Even with sealed grout joints, water and vapor can penetrate between the tiles in shower walls and floors and cause serious damage. Moisture that collects in the wall cavity or floor structure of a shower is the primary cause of mold growth. But a properly installed tile shower can be hygienic and maintenance-free while providing a luxurious look that can’t be matched by other materials.
The Schluter-Shower System for ceramic tile showers eliminates the possibility of damaging leaks and mold growth due to moisture penetration. This membrane/ drain system is used to create a waterproof shower before the tiles are installed. A major breakthrough for installers, the system is not only waterproof, but vaportight as well, so ceramic tile showers can be constructed using standard drywall.
The Schluter-Shower System consists of four primary components: Schluter-KERDI waterproofing membrane; Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN; Schluter-KERDI-SHOWER-ST prefabricated tray; and Schluter-KERDI-SHOWER-SC curb. When used together, these components make installation much easier and eliminate the potential for mold and mildew growth within the system.
KERDI, a sheet-applied waterproofing membrane, is installed on the walls, floor, and curb of the shower using thin-set mortar (Small rolls of KERDI-BAND are available to create a 2-inch overlap at the seams.). Tiles are then set directly onto the KERDI with unmodified thin-set mortar.
In conventional tile shower assemblies, two-stage floor drains are designed to connect to shower pan liners below the mortar bed. This conventional method allows moisture to saturate the mortar bed, and over time increases the risk of leaks, causes efflorescence, and fosters mold growth. KERDI-DRAIN allows for a simple and secure connection to the KERDI membrane at the top of the assembly rather than below it, eliminating any risk of water or moisture penetrating the mortar bed.
The prefabricated, sloped shower tray and curb, two components of the Schluter-Shower System, are made of expanded polystyrene, which is extremely lightweight and easy to cut. The tray comes in three sizes, 48" x 48", 72" x 72", and 32" x 60", which is also available with an off-center drain opening designed to simplify a standard bathtub replacement. Total project time is dramatically reduced with the use of the tray and curb because there is no need to wait for a mortar bed to cure.
When a shower is designed in such a way that it cannot accommodate the prefabricated tray, KERDI-DRAIN and KERDI waterproofing membrane can also be used on top of a traditional mortar bed to create a watertight shower assembly.
Components of the Schluter-Shower System are sold both individually and as a kit.
