Exterior Applications - Wood Substrate (Over Unoccupied Space)

1. Sloped Wood Structure

A sufficient slope (1.5 - 2%) is necessary for the proper function of the assembly. Subfloor/underlayment configuration according to detail D-W16-T, D-W19-T, D-W24-T, or D-W-S. Use exterior grade subfloor panels.

2. Exterior-rated Cement Backerboard

Spread a supporting bed of unmodified thin-set mortar over the substrate using a 1/4" x 1/4" (6 x 6 mm) square-notched trowel, and immediately embed the backerboard panel in the mortar leaving a 1/8" - 3/16" (3 - 5 mm) gap between all panel edges and sides. Offset joints in the backerboard panels in such a way that they do not line up with joints in the substrate. Fill gaps between panels with dry-set mortar and tape all joints with 2" (50 mm)-wide alkali-resistant mesh tape. Fasteners and fastening schedule per manufacturer’s directions.

3. Schluter-DITRA

Install Schluter-DITRA on cement backerboard using unmodified thin-set mortar.

4. Schluter-BARA-RTK

Edging profile with drip lip and support for the Schluter-BARIN gutter system.

5. Schluter-KERDI-BAND

Polyethylene seaming tape, with a fleece fabric on both sides, anchors into the unmodified thin-set mortar for completely sealed connections, including floor/wall connections and seaming Schluter-DITRA.

Note: The 7-1/4" (185 mm) wide KERDI-BAND is used over the DITRA/BARA-RTK junction.

6. Schluter-KERDI-FIX

Single-component elastomeric sealant, used to bond Schluter-KERDI-BAND to Schluter-BARA profiles.

7. Schluter-DILEX-EKE

Corner movement profile for floor/wall connections.

8. Schluter-RONDEC or -JOLLY

Edging profiles provide a clean finish for base tiles. Available in many different colors and finishes. Material: stainless steel or aluminum.

9. Schluter-BARIN

Gutter system made of color-coated aluminum, for water management at the perimeter of balconies and terraces. Also available: a complete line of system accessories.

10. Schluter-SCHIENE/-JOLLY/-RONDEC

Color-coated aluminum profiles to match Schluter-BARA/-BARIN; also available in stainless steel.

11. Ceramic or stone tile

Install surface covering using unmodified thin-set mortar.

Note: Movement joints are mandatory; see guidelines for the placement of movement joints for more details.

Note regarding occupied space: Occupied space is not limited to living space. For example, garages, open-air balconies with finished ceilings beneath, etc., should be treated as occupied space. Please contact Schluter-Systems with any questions.
