Heated Floor - Residential
with Schluter-BEKOTEC
Tiled floors are very durable and aesthetically pleasing. When installed with a radiant heat system, tiled floors can become an environmentally friendly, efficient way to heat a home.
Radiant heat warms a room by heating the floor, as well as the major elements in a room (e.g., desk, couch, chair, etc.), thereby distributing heat in a comfortable way throughout the space. In contrast, a "forced air" heating method, such as a radiator or heating vent, blows hot air into specific areas of a room, often only heating those areas closest to the heat source.
Traditional radiant heat systems require a thick slab of mortar into which the radiant heat tubes are set and over which tiles are installed. Mortar screeds for radiant heat, however, are heavy, costly, and labor intensive, all of which are problems in construction.
Schluter-BEKOTEC is a lightweight modular screed system that solves this problem, and is particularly suited for radiant heat applications with ceramic tile coverings.
BEKOTEC is a studded polystyrene screed panel that confines curing stresses into small modules and eliminates curling and continuous cracks without any saw cuts or control joints. The studs allow for easy installation of hydronic radiant heat tubing without the need for fasteners.
BEKOTEC uses less screed material than conventional (mortar screed) applications, which not only results in less weight, but also allows the floor heating to respond more quickly and operate at a lower temperature range.
