Schluter Brings Tile Setting to Skills Canada

Schluter®-Systems will be continuing its mandate to educate Canada’s future tile setters at the Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton, NB on June 6 and 7. For the second year in a row Schluter will have an interactive exhibit in the Try-A-Trade area at the national gathering of youth interested in professional trades careers.

The Schluter area will be a combination of inspiration, hands-on learning, and fun. The interactive area is set in front of an urban backdrop that features a grafitti tile wall and a completely tiled park bench designed to show the students there is a lot more to a career in tile setting than one might think. Tile setting is a profession that requires a blend of hands-on skill, attention to detail, and creativity.

Students will have an opportunity to learn and to try some of the hands-on skills that professionals use regularly. They will be able to measure and cut a tile, install a section of uncoupling membrane, and set 1 full tile and two cut pieces of tile along with a piece of a profile. This small activity represents the core actions that are typical of many tile floor and wall installations and provides a jumping-off point for students to ask questions and learn more about the trade. They will use a tile cutter and trowel – two of the most frequently used tools of the profession.

In addition to hands-on activities, Skills Canada ensures that students are aware of the nine essential skills that are important to successful tradespeople. The focus at this year’s event is on the essential skill of communication. To demonstrate the importance of the skill and have some fun, the Schluter area features a game/challenge that is designed for two people to participate in together. Students can bring their BFF and find out just how well they really communicate with one another.
