Schluter®-PRIMER-PS

Primer for peel & stick membranes

PRIMER-PS is a ready-to-use, quick-drying topical primer designed specifically for Schluter’s peel and stick membranes. It is formulated to enhance the bond of peel and stick membranes to difficult-to-bond-to surfaces such as OSB, plywood, gypsum concrete, or vinyl. PRIMER-PS can be used in interior applications where increased adhesion is required over various porous and non-porous substrates.
  • Suitable for use with DITRA-PS, DITRA-HEAT-PS, and DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS
  • Dries in as little as 15 minutes depending on conditions of application area
  • Ready-to-use, one-coat application with roller or broom
  • One-component, solvent-free, water-based
  • Low odor and zero-VOC
  • Freeze/thaw stable

Schluter®-PRIMER-PS is a ready-to-use, one-component, solvent-free, water-based primer formulated to enhance the bond of Schluter peel and stick membranes to difficult-to-bond-to surfaces such as OSB, plywood, gypsum concrete, or vinyl. PRIMER-PS is suitable for use with DITRA-PS®, DITRA-HEAT-PS®, and DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS®. PRIMER-PS can be used in interior applications where increased adhesion is required over various porous and non-porous substrates.

Shelf life and storage: 12 months from the manufacture date on the package in unopened, properly stored containers.

Schluter®-PRIMER-PS must be stored between 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32°C). Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Rotate stock and use the oldest material first.

Freeze-thaw stability: 1 cycle at 0°F (-18°C). If primer has frozen, allow to thaw under normal room temperature.

For complete installation guidelines and warranty criteria, please download the appropriate Schluter® Installation Handbook and view the installation videos.

Surface Preparation: The surface where PRIMER-PS is to be applied must be clean, smooth, dry, and free of moisture. Any contaminants such as paint, grease, oil, pen markings, sealers, curing compounds, flooring adhesive residue that is not well bonded, etc. that may prevent proper bond must be removed. Thoroughly clean surface to remove dirt and debris.

PRIMER-PS is not a substitute for proper surface preparation. Inadequate surface preparation may lead to a poor bond or no bond at all.

Mixing: Due to shipping and storage, settling of solid resin may occur. Stir thoroughly before use. Do not dilute.

Application: The application area shall be fully enclosed, weather tight, with an installed operating HVAC system. The application area, substrate, and primer must be acclimated and applied at a temperature between 40°- 85°F (5° - 30°C) for 48 hours prior to use. The relative humidity of the application area shall be maintained between 35-55%.

Carefully read all instructions before application. Do not dilute primer. Pour an adequate amount of primer from container directly onto the substrate or pour primer from container into a disposable paint tray.  Any puddling during application will significantly delay dry time, especially over less porous substrates.

1. Apply a thin-even coat using a 1/4" (6 mm) medium-nap paint roller, or a similar brush, sponge, or garden-type sprayer.  Do not leave any bare spots or excessive amounts of primer. Keep roller wet throughout the application process.  Note: Replace rollers regularly and between applications to avoid drying on roller.

PRIMER-PS is a topical primer, so it is crucial to apply a uniform thin-coat for consistent dry time and performance in the application area. For best application method, a ¼” (6 mm) medium-nap paint roller is recommended.

2. Once applied, the primer must be allowed to dry to the touch and not transfer to finger.  Drying will take approximately 10-60 minutes depending upon substrate porosity, room temperature, and humidity. Allow the coat to dry fully before applying the peel and stick membrane. If PRIMER-PS remains uncovered for more than 48 hours, apply a second coat.

If the installer is unsure if PRIMER-PS is ready for membrane to be applied, test the bond with a small spot check to determine if initial bond is adequate. If the membrane does not initially form a bond, the primer needs further time to dry.

Clean Up: Clean roller or brush with water while PRIMER-PS is still wet.  Remove wet primer from tools and equipment with soapy water and a clean cloth. Use mineral spirits to remove dried primer. Use caution when handling flammable solvents.

Drying Time: The drying time of PRIMER-PS depends on the porosity of the substrate, the air temperature and relative humidity. Under average drying conditions, [70°F (21°C), 55% RH], PRIMER-PS will dry in 10-60 minutes. Excessive coat thickness will extend drying time and delay membrane installation.
